For most babies and new mothers, breastfeeding is the most natural and healthiest option. That's why the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly endorses breastfeeding as the ideal source for nutrition and recommends it for a baby's first year of life.
Supporting the Choice to Breastfeed
Breastfeeding is the choice for most new mothers at Central DuPage Hospital. But it can be a challenge. Some women and newborns have difficulty getting started. You may experience concerns or have questions in the early weeks postpartum. The Center for Lactation at CDH is dedicated to helping mother and baby achieve success at breastfeeding. Your baby will benefit from any amount of time you choose to breastfeed.
To optimize breastfeeding success, CDH offers a prenatal breastfeeding class that is highly encouraged for mothers who are planning to breastfeed. Learn more about our breastfeeding class and other prenatal and postnatal classes and resources.
Working through Challenges
For many mothers and infants, breastfeeding is a learned behavior. The Center for Lactation offers inpatient assistance to newly delivered mothers. We also offer outpatient help to moms who experience difficulty at any point in their breastfeeding experience. Our lactation consultants are available to answer questions related to breastfeeding, such as:
- Difficulty sucking
- Inability to hear babies' swallows
- Painful, engorged breasts contributing to feeding difficulty
- Breast pain, tenderness, discharge or other worrisome symptoms
- Baby never seems "full" after feeding
- Baby isn't urinating, has infrequent stools or no stools in 24- to 48-hour period
CDH offers retail breast pumps for rental or purchase. Breast pump replacement parts are also available.
