Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Breathing is an essential part of life most people take for granted. However, for individuals with lung-related diseases, each breath can be a struggle. But, it doesn’t have to be. The Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) Pulmonary Rehabilitation team can help you manage your disease:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Pre/post lung transplant
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Sacroidosis

Getting Started

CDH Pulmonary Rehabilitation services are provided on an outpatient basis that requires a physician’s referral to start the process. During your initial visit to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation office, a respiratory therapist will meet with you to discuss your condition and together you will develop realistic goals and a customized therapy plan. A few simple tests also will be done to evaluate your overall physical condition.

Once your plan and tests are completed, you will need to make appointments with the various Pulmonary Rehabilitation team members to set your plan in motion. These can include:

  • Physical reconditioning
  • Breathing retraining
  • Energy conservation in daily activities
  • Effective coughing techniques
  • Nutrition therapy
  • Stress and Panic control techniques
  • Medication education
  • Relaxation techniques

The Program

Because each pulmonary rehabilitation program is unique to the individual, no two are exactly alike. However, there are portions of your program that may include group sessions such as exercise. These sessions typically meet two to three times per week at varying times of the day. Your customized program can last up to 10 weeks, depending upon your progress. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs are usually covered by medical insurance, but you should check with your provider before starting your program to determine if there are any limitations.

Benefits of the program include:

  • Reduced symptoms
  • Improved independence through self-management
  • Increased strength and endurance
  • Increased activity levels
  • Healthier lifestyle
  • Improved emotional well-being
  • Supportive environment
  • Potential prevention of infections, complications and hospitalization
  • Dietary Counseling
