What is Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy?
Minimally invasive breast biopsy may be recommended when a spot or mass of abnormal breast tissue is found (usually through a mammogram).
The biopsy allows for more detailed analysis of the tissue. Licensed radiologic technologists use a thin needle to remove a small piece of tissue for analysis. Stereotactic core biopsy offers greater precision, as computerized equipment guides the needle to the exact location of the mass or calcification. Because they use needles rather than incisions, today’s biopsy techniques are much less invasive than techniques done years ago.
According to the American Cancer Society, in the majority of cases, most tissue biopsies are benign (not cancerous).
Our comprehensive breast biopsy services include image-guided breast biopsy (by digital imaging, MRI or ultrasound) and stereotactic core biopsy.
How to Prepare for Your Procedure
- Wear a two piece outfit. Please wear a bra. The slacks should have no buttons, snaps or zippers.
- You may take all normal, regular, or daily medications. But if you take aspirin or blood thinners, discontinue using them for three (3) days before the procedure. Check with your physician if you have any questions.
- Eat before coming to the hospital.
- You may bring a tape or CD to be played during the procedure.
What to Expect
During the exam, you will lie face down on a specially designed table. Your breast will be placed through an opening in the table top. With the table top raised your physician and the technologist will perform the procedure from below. Your breast will be held in position throughout the procedure with slight compression, similar to a mammogram. Several pictures will be taken. The breast area will be numbed by a small injection of a local anesthetic. A sampling needle will be inserted into the breast to remove tissue core samples. You may feel a slight pressure, but you should not feel any pain. The procedure will take approximately one hour.
Members of the minimally invasive breast biopsy team have experience, expertise and compassion. The team includes:
- Board-certified radiologists (MDs)
- Licensed radiological technologists with advanced mammography certification
