Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Lurie_ChildrensSometimes our youngest and tiniest patients need a big helping hand from highly trained specialists and from medical technology designed especially for neonates (newborns).

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a state-designated Level III facility staffed by specialists in the pediatric program, Lurie Children's at Cadence Health. The 23-bed unit uses state-of-the-art technology and treatments, ensuring a high level of care for newborns with medical challenges. The NICU features all private rooms where parents can bond with their baby. Each room has controls for lighting, temperature and music, allowing families to create a more personal space within an intensive care environment. For your child's safety, the NICU is locked and secured at all times.

Specialized Services for our Tiniest Patients

The Lurie Children's neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners and nurse specialists of the NICU provide 24-hour onsite care of neonates with a full range of medical and surgical concerns including:

  • Congenital anomalies such as heart malformation
  • Disorders of the lung and gastrointestinal systems
  • Low-birth weight (under 2,500 grams)
  • Medical complications of the neonate such as infection, slow transition and poor feeding
