Prostate Cancer Screening and Treatment
Know the Odds. Know Your Score. Know Your Options.
What are the odds you'll be affected? One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. So whether it's you, a parent, a relative or a friend, chances are you'll have a reason to know more about prostate cancer.
Know your score by getting checked. Regular exams with your physician can help detect prostate cancer earlier when it is more easily treated. If you or a loved one are concerned about prostate cancer, see your physician or find a physician by calling Cadence Health at 630.933.4234. TTY for the hearing impaired 630.933.4833.
You can find almost every kind of prostate cancer treatment option you might need right at Cadence Health. It’s the only place in Illinois to offer both proton therapy* and da Vinci® Surgery, each proven to improve your recovery and quality of life, with minimal side effects.
The CDH Proton Center*
The CDH Proton Center,* is the first and only center in Illinois to offer proton therapy, which targets tumors more precisely to allow higher doses to be deposited directly in the tumor, with less damage to healthy tissue and fewer side effects such as ED and incontinence.
Proton therapy is one of the most precise forms of radiation therapy available today. When compared to standard X-ray radiation, it treats many of the same tumors and is equally effective at destroying cancer cells. However, unlike X-rays, proton therapy uses protons that can be precisely controlled so that most of the radiation ends up directly in the tumor. This is important when the tumor is located near critical organs or structures, such as the case in treating prostate cancer.

CDH was the first hospital in DuPage County to offer da Vinci® Surgery, a robotic-assisted minimally invasive approach used by physicians to perform delicate prostate and gynecological procedures. Most patients experience less bleeding, quicker recovery and better post-surgery function. Today at CDH, a variety of surgeries can be performed through holes as small as a pencil’s width. If you require treatment, that can mean less pain, a faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay.
da Vinci Prostatectomy
Referred to by many as robotic surgery for prostate cancer or robotic prostatectomy, da Vinci Prostatectomy is more accurately a robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery that is quickly becoming the preferred treatment for removal of the prostate following early diagnosis of prostate cancer. In fact, studies suggest that da Vinci Prostatectomy may be the most effective, least invasive prostate surgery performed today. (1)
Though any diagnosis of cancer can be traumatic, the good news is that if your doctor recommends prostate surgery, the cancer was probably caught early.
da Vinci Prostatectomy is performed with the assistance of the da Vinci Surgical System – the latest evolution in robotics technology. The da Vinci Surgical System enables surgeons to operate with precision and control using only a few small incisions. da Vinci Prostatectomy offers these potential benefits:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Fewer complications
- Less scarring
- A shorter hospital stay
- And a faster return to normal daily activities
If you are a candidate for prostate surgery, talk to a CDH surgeon who performs da Vinci Prostatectomy.

*The CDH Proton Center (Center) is a joint venture between Cadence Health and Radiation Oncology Consultants, Ltd. Both organizations are dedicated to providing proton therapy in Illinois. The physicians that practice at the Center are neither agents nor employees of Cadence Health, nor CDH. They have chosen this facility as the place they wish to care for and treat their private patients.
1. Most effective minimally invasive surgery in terms of cancer control, potency and continence, cancer control being defined in part by margin rates and PSA test scores. The following studies provide support for da Vinci Prostatectomy's effectiveness in these three areas: Ahlering TE, Woo D, Eichel L, Lee DI, Edwards R, Skarecky DW. Robot-assisted versus open radical prostatectomy: a comparison of one surgeon's outcomes. Urology. 2004 May;63(5):819-22. Menon M, Tewari A, Peabody JO, Shrivastava A, Kaul S, Bhandari A, Hemal AK. Please also see the Clinical References section of the site for additional clinical support. While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci® System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.
