First In Hospital ACS Wig Boutique in Illinois at CDH

American Cancer Society brings free service to Winfield hospital

WINFIELD, Ill., December 7, 2009 – Dealing with the affects of cancer just got a little easier at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) with the opening of the new American Cancer Society (ACS) Wig Boutique. This collaboration has created a convenient option in the community for those anticipating hair loss due to the treatment of this disease – regardless of the patient’s financial ability or place of treatment.

According to the ACS, hair loss can happen when chemotherapy drugs travel throughout the body to destroy cancer cells. Some of these drugs damage hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out. Hair loss can be hard to predict. Some patients have it and others do not -- even when they take the same drugs.

The boutique, supported by the patient-services program of the DuPage County Region of American Cancer Society, will open Wednesday, December 9. It will initially be open by appointment only and will expand hours as demand increases. Female cancer patients will be personally fit and take home a brand new wig along with information about the other ACS resources available at no charge.  For more information about the boutique or to make an appointment, please call (630) 933-4200 or TTY for the hearing impaired 630-933-4833.

Also at CDH, the ACS hosts the free class “Look Good… Feel Better,” where those coping with appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation learn tips and hands-on instruction in makeup, skincare and the use of wigs, scarves and turbans. Lauded as enjoyable evenings, these sessions avail women the opportunity to try a ‘new look’ with cosmetologists and stylists in the company of friends or family members. The program is free, paid for by generous donations to the ACS. The program will begin again in January, occurring the second Monday of every month from 6 to 8 p.m.  For more information or reservations, call 630-933-4234 or TTY for the hearing impaired 630-933-4833.
