Expanded and Renovated Pediatric ER Now Open
Department accommodates young patients who need coordinated care in a child friendly atmosphere.
Winfield, Ill., January 7, 2011 – Children in the jungle themed waiting room of the pediatric emergency department at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) are often found walking through the new koi pond. “It’s an incredibly popular distraction device,” says Michele Moran, RN, ANM, assistant manager of the pediatric emergency department, of the digital interactive simulated koi pond that displays on the floor in the waiting area. “It soothes scared and anxious children and entertains bored siblings while they wait.”
Originally opened in 2006 in conjunction with the Children’s Memorial at Central DuPage Hospital pediatric program, the Pediatric Emergency Department at CDH is run by pediatric emergency medicine specialists, who are on the medical staff at CDH and Children’s Memorial Hospital, and CDH nurses. The renovation and expansion increased the department from six to 10 treatment bays; improved the waiting room and the treatment rooms feature kid friendly designs.
The department is designated by the State of Illinois as a level II trauma center; emergency care is provided for more than 17,000 babies and children up to age 18 each year. The department is open noon to midnight seven days a week.
“The benefit of a pediatric emergency room is more than the child-sized technology and medical equipment, even though those things do work to make children feel more comfortable during diagnosis and treatment,” says Pediatric Medical Director Jeffrey Loughead, M.D. “The pediatric specialists and subspecialists involved in the unique relationship between CDH and Children’s Memorial offer the real benefit to pediatric patients.” For example, through a medical imaging system, pediatric radiologists on the medical staff at CDH and Children’s Memorial Hospital can simultaneously view and interpret images and scans – allowing for quicker diagnosis and more timely treatment for our young patients. “These pediatric radiologists are specifically trained to know all the little changes in growing bodies and organ systems that a general radiologist may not be as familiar," he says.
