CDH Earns National Recognition for Nursing Excellence

WINFIELD, Ill., September 27, 2010 – It’s one of the highest levels of nursing recognition a hospital can achieve. Central DuPage Hospital (CDH), of Winfield, Ill., has achieved Magnet® recognition for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credential Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.

“The Magnet recognition is a tremendous achievement for CDH. It is validation of who we really are,” says project co-leader Gina Reid Tinio, MS, MPH, RN-BC, director of professional development at CDH. “We like to think of it as a report card illustrating what we have already been doing for many years – working as a team to provide the highest quality care possible for the people of our community.”

“This recognition is a direct testament to the outstanding nurses and nursing leadership we work with every day at CDH,” says CDH CEO Luke McGuinness. “Our Magnet team painstakingly compiled more than 3,000 pages illustrating 200 stories of patient care excellence that met 116 ANCC criteria centered on structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovations and improvements, and transformational leadership and empirical outcomes.”

The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. Applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation that includes extensive interviews and review of nursing services. Research shows there are clear benefits to hospitals that are awarded Magnet status and to the communities they serve:

  • Healthcare consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the Magnet Recognition Program.
  • Magnet designated facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction.
  • Because quality nursing is one of the most important factors in enlisting high caliber physicians and specialists, Magnet status becomes an attractive force that extends to the entire facility.

ANCC is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. CDH’s Magnet status is valid for four years.
